FNWF

July has arrived and it was time for
A little rest was in order from hand quilting. I have been wanting to begin Brinton Hall and last night gave in! So I  hung up my old dinosaur suit behind the door and actually "glued"......yes people you heard correctly I actually glue basted the hexies!
Certainly is quicker and easier on the fingers.....but I am not sure whether I liked it or not. I was also not sure whether I put to little or too much on....yikes!
Anyway I stitched my first crown together and got it appliqued on.
Needs a good press but there again I was unsure if you can press when you have glued? Anybody? Help???
Not to be a whimp I have glued the 2nd set and begun stitching.....love this set.
And wouldn't you know it. I only have 50 x 1 inch hexies and need a lot more so only a little more progress possible while I wait for the new hexies to arrive.
I am so excited to have started this quilt. I have loved it from afar for so long.
Meanwhile I shall do a little work on block 6 of Blessings.
You can pop over to Cheryll's HERE to see what everyone was up to.
Have a relaxing weekend.

Namaste and Blessings Michelle xxx

  3. I glue but use semi soluble appliqué papers that don't need to be removed and I do iron them....

  4. I've never tried gluing my hexies. I really enjoy sewing them, so I'll continue with that method. Your hexies are beautiful!!

  6. I am firmly in the dinosaur camp, I stitch my hexies, I have tried glue but didn't find it as firm as stitching, it came undone as I stitched..maybe nor enough glue, I am not sure.Lovely hexies, is exciting to start a new project.

  8. Hello Michelle,

Beautiful fabrics, I am a old style hexie girl, far too many toxins in my world I have to be careful what is in it, plus it is plastic free July in our home. Are you planning on painting that Koala? Have a lovely weekend Michelle.

    Happy days.
    Bev.

  9. I've only ever glued hexies, but each to their own. Sometimes the prep can be as relaxing as the sewing. I have no trouble ironing glued hexies, and find that a quick iron can help release the papers. Nice to finally give in to a new project.

  10. Gluing is popular here, I haven't tried it myself so can't speak for it......but I'm cautious about using chemicals on fabric anyway.

  12. You got a lovely lot of work done on your new project Michelle. I took ages to try glueing but now tend to only glue hexies but shapes with really 'pointy' angles I still tend to thread baste.

  13. Just read through all the comments left Michelle - I too am in the no glue camp, doesn't it make your fingers messy? And also isn't it messy. Nice work anyway, I always love your fabric choices and yes, are you going to paint that Koala? xx

  17. I have glued hexies but only a dab to hold the paper while I hand baste them, have had no issues getting the papers back out with this method. Your hexies look so pretty .

  18. Brinton Hall looks lovely you've shown great restraint in not starting it sooner and yes gluing is quicker but not too sure about ironing them hopefully someone else can come to your rescue :) Barb.

  19. Lovely to see what you got up to at FNWF (I completely forgot it was time for FNWF!)some great projects happening! I love hexies but only glue the centre with a small dab to keep it in place while basting them.... I enjoy anything that is portable handwork.... I also am a bit concerned as to whether there would ever be any chemical reaction with the fabric - one day!

  20. love the idea of the hexies bordering a large print...one day....
i use an iron on stabiliser for my hexies and stitch them over, could never grasp the paper method, they always got away from me the little buggers.
    happy stitching

  21. I so glue - but i known there is a fine line between enough to hold them and too much so that it is hard to get the papers out. Chooky suggests spraying ironing and then removing the papers - all in one go...I am still not convinced about glue over many years . . .
oh but they are pretty - and the quilt will be lovely.

  22. Nah, you can keep the glue, I still prefer basting with cheap thread. I get glue on my fingers and get in a real mess lol. I actually find basting just as quick. Looking lovely though.

  23. So interesting to read the previous Comments about glue!
Well I stick with my dinosaur-ic ways & thread baste with cheap thread... I guess if the shape is only basted for a short time the glue is a good option, but nowhere online can I find anything about the long-term effects of the glue on the fabrics , even after the hexy card has been removed.

  25. I like the gluing process but its not for everyone. I try to only use a small amount of glue so the fabric doesn't fry. Your project is looking great Michelle,

  26. This look s like a very interesting and challenging project. I will watch your gluing with interest.

  27. What a stunning project this is going to be Michelle and well done on the gluing lol

  28. I glue short term projects and thread baste long term ones. Beautiful quilt design, don't know how you resisted for so long.

  29. I have not thought of glue basting hexies, but what a great idea. When I baste mine I make the stitch bigger on my sewing machine and sew them down that way. Such a beautiful project. It is time for me to pull mine out again, has been way to long.

  30. Oh lala your new quilt is going to be so pretty - you've made a gorgeous start!! I did al my big hexie quilt with glue - don't think I"ve tried to press it though - I don't know if I would have got such a big quilt if I'd had to thread baste the hexies....

  32. It does not take much glue to hold...... I spray starch and iron and remove papers immediately...I think ironing helps release at times....... If it is really hard to get out probably too much glue...... I slide a Taylor's awl between the paper and card to unglue and then pop the papers out........
