Fabric Drought Broken

Seems like every town that had some kind of craft supplies or fabrics had either shut down....we were too late to catch them or we were leaving to early. But Aha! Today I heard about a business called Browns Framing and Craft Shed....affectionately known as the "big green shed". What lovely ladies and it was truly an Aladdins cave of all things creative! And were kind enough to let me buy 10cms of some pretties for my clamshells. I had a very nice time....another reason to love Charters Towers.

So one very happy little stitcher climbed on board and we finished our time here with a visit to the Burdekin Weir.

The Mr. was interested in all the facts and figures....

I however was content enough to enjoy the lovely park here....

And of course there is always beautiful critters to spy on.....lovely Common Crow butterfly enjoying the scarlet bottle brushes.

Back at camp I throughly enjoyed watching this little peewee collecting grass for it's nest.....dunking the grass in a muddy puddle and flying away to add to the building work, only to return again and again. Not a good photo but I so want to remember this delightful moment.

Lots of busy little birdie feet in the mud.....

On the road again tomorrow, again a new direction and road.

After the Gorge

We travelled further west today to the old gold town of Charters Towers. As it wasn't too long a drive we set out on a little exploring expedition after we set up.
I loved all the old buildings in town. Some still standing gracefully amidst modern surrounds.

We stumbled on to this little piece of history quite by accident. The Miners Cottage.

What fun we had. Owner Allen was not only a fountain of knowledge about the towns gold mining history  but a huge character and had us giggling and guessing about his many collected curiosities. The cottage is jam packed with all manner of things....history and collectables. Thank you Allen.

We drove up to Towers Hill Reserve for a view over the country side.

We certainly did not expect to experience so much in one afternoon.
I have to say I like Charters Towers and is on our list for a more dedicated trip  to this area later down the track.
Well folks that's about it for now....phew I hear  you say lol!

Porcupine Gorge National Park

Little did we know that when we continued west on our little adventure we would discover a beautiful little Queensland jewel. The countryside seems so dry and brittle and then you come upon this wonderful gorge.

After viewing the gorge from the lookout we ventured a bit further to take the 2.4km round trip down into the gorge to see the amazing Pyramid Rock up close.

The walk down into the gorge was very pleasant but as we were going down lots of rocky steps it did occur....might not be much fun on the return trip up.

The gorge was so interesting with little waterholes and billabongs along the huge stone floor....I couldn't get over the beautiful scarlet bottle brushes growing in groves near the waterholes.

We parked ourselves in the shade of a group of these lovely trees for a rest and a snack.

The object of the exercise......Pyramid Rock!

Definitely wouldn't like to slip and fall into some of the cavenous holes along the floor.

The walls of the gorge are very imposing and apparently Wedge tailed Eagles call the escarpment home.

We loved our morning of exploring this special spot.

Mr R. moaning....."are we there yet? " Lol.

He was greatly cheered after a visit here on the way home.

We refueled on deliciously cold milkshakes and checked out all the Holden memorbillia which was right up my Holden buffs street, so to speak!
We finished the day with a drive to Mt Walker for a view over Hughenden.

We stayed and shared the glorious sunset with lovely fellow travellers Bob and Barb.
Simply gorgeous!

 Great finale for a great day.
We're now in Charters Towers and I will post that next.
