If like me you as a child loved the book by Jeannie Gunn...."We of the Never Never " then you would have enjoyed my wander yesterday.
We visted the original site of the Elsey station homestead which the true story was centred around.
When you gaze around at the landscape.....
You can't help but wonder what Jeannie must have thought about the isolation of the place.
We visited the Elsey station cemetery where Jeannie's husband is buried.
Even though there is a memorial to Jeannie she rests in her home town of Melbourne.
I couldn't get over this termite mound there! I know that I am short but!
At the Homestead where we are staying, there is the replica of Elsey station house made for the movie of the book.
These are the costumes worn by Angela Punch MacGregor in the movie.....beautiful but hard to get a good photo....the glass was filthy.

A very interesting day bringing a favourite childhood book to life.
I am finishing on a very sad note after a sudden illness a couple of weeks ago my dear friend Gaye passed away yesterday. I am rather shocked that she is no longer here....I will miss sharing cuppas and chats over Aussie folklore and our love of all things old and treasured and she shared a love of books just like the one above. She was very much on my mind as I explored.
My love and prayers go out to Gayes family and friends. I will miss you terribly my friend xxx

ReplyDeleteWe had that book in our family bookcase when I was growing up, and it was often discussed. What a treat to visit the Elsey Station and also to see the sets from the movie.

Nine years ago my husband and I drove a car through to Darwin for our daughter, and two years ago, my daughter and I drove it back again to Victoria. Along the way we visited the places that you are visiting. I particularly loved Daly Waters, and Mataranka. My daughter was chuffed to find a business card that she has left at Daly Waters some time ago, still displayed. Wonderful memories of our great country. Cheers, Michelle, and enjoy your travels.

ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that your dear friend has passed over. That would have been quite a shock for you. Lovely opportunity to visit that homestead replica and original site. Katherine Gorge will be spectacular. I went there back in the 70s or early 80's. Can't remember now as I have been to Darwin twice over that period of time. Enjoy cruising down the gorge and seeing those HUGE salt water crocs.
