Happy Friday everyone. For a while now I have been watching all you clever ladies in blogland crocheting up a storm and somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I remembered that I had once done a lot of crochet. So I popped off to the library and got this book.
While it was a little helpful (which doesn't say a lot for me given the title) I really wanted to start with the good old "Granny Squares". I bought some veeerry cheap yarn from the local bargain shop and looked online and was amazed at all the tutorials for them. I can't remember or tell you which one I actually followed but it got me started again and I have made these...
I am still a little unco with the changing colours but they are square and I am really enjoying doing them and feel quite chuffedabout it all. The yarn is actually a bit prettier than pictured. Hopefully if I get in enough practice I may lash out and buy some yummy yarn. I also couldn't find anywhere that could tell me what hook to use with what ply yarn. I really want to make the Granny square with the simple flower in the centre...bit ambitious do you think???? Well I think you have to have something to aim for.
On the sewing front I put a final border around the bears. I think it looks ok now. I was very limited as to what I could use because of the little scrappy borders. I am sure it will look nice when it is quilted.
I had also thought of a little applique for the border but I think it will detract from the stitcheries...
Enjoy your weekend and to all those wonderful women out there who are known as "Mum" by their children I hope your Mother's Day is as special as you are.
Blessings Michelle xxx
Lovely granny squares, it looks like you are doing really well already!! Hugs Wendy
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have mastered those squares. Well done! Your quilt will be so beautiful ...sweet little stitcheries and the borders look great!
ReplyDeleteYour squares a very well done and your quilt is adorable. Have a brilliant mothers day.
ReplyDeleteYour squares look great, with the size of your crochet hooks it's all about your tension, if you're tight crocheter you may need to go up in soze and if you're a loose crocheter you may need to go down it's all a matter of practice and what feels right for you. Look forward to seeing those flower granny's :) Barb.
ReplyDeleteP.S: if you need nay more help in regards to crochet just email me :)
Michelle - you might get a few of us started - too much temptation - too little time! Your squares look great!
ReplyDeleteYou are one talented lady Michelle!!!
ReplyDeleteEnJoY YOUR day on Sunday too! :)
You have a great Mother's Day too! That border fabric is a good choice. I taught myself to crochet a million years ago, when no one knew how so there was no one to teach me......don't do so much now, although I did wear my crochet dresses when I was young and lovely.
ReplyDeleteYour granny squares look good to me and we know that practice makes perfect. Love the colours you have chosen.
ReplyDeleteLove your crochet. The granny squares always look so happy. The quilt looks good with the pretty block borders and outer border.
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle - you are doing a fabulous job with your squares. It's so lovely to see people taking up crochet again.
ReplyDeleteI found a blog called Attic24 (just google it) and Lucy the lovely lady who owns it is very generous with her tutorials for various lovely things.
She also lists blogs she likes to visit and a lot of them also have tutorials. I have seen a flower in a granny square tutorial on one of them, but unfortunately can't remember which one. It's fun to surf anyway.
Hope that helps, I know it did for me.
Best wishes and Happy crocheting, stitching etc, etc.

well done with your crocheting Michelle and your quilt is looking gorgeous, you have been busy.xx
ReplyDeleteGreat work with the crochet. I am still learning and have to go to classes. I am still in need of lots of help. Those squares look gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI like the border you have chosen for the blocks. It's a delightful fabric.
Your granny squares look very good. Crochet is still on my todo list. Happy Mothers Day to you too.
ReplyDeleteLovely crocheting Michelle - wish I could do that. Mum knitted but didn't crochet, so I never learnt, but I do so drool over all the beautiful crocheted rugs and things. Meanwhile your bears are looking very happy with their new border fabric
ReplyDeleteYou have made some lovely squares. My friend at quilting has been making premmie baby hats and I have been watching her thinking I will have to get her to teach me one day, just need a few more hours in the day. Really like your border fabric. Can't wait to see the whole quilt. Hugs....
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your hooking. The grannies are looking lovely. Usually the bargain yarn is worked with a 4-4.5 mm hook depending on tension. Flowers are just a baby step from grannies.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous bears, love the spotty border.
I think, probably, the hook size depends on the person crocheting as you have to see how many stitches per inch you do and compare that to the gauge on the pattern. Different needles for different thickness of yarn, obviously, you wouldn't use a tiny one on 4 ply because you couldn't keep it on the needle.
ReplyDeleteI think you're doing fine...crocheting is such a good hand work because you can do it while your mind is occupied with TV or reading on the computer.
My grandmother tried to teach me when I was a child and I did fine except for the tension. It wasn't until after my son was born that I picked it up again and my neighbor helped me learn more about it.
Blessings, and Happy Mother's Day.
Mama Bear
Great job...they are all perfectly square! :)
ReplyDeleteI think I am going to have to take a refresher in crochet as I can't remember half of the stuff I used to do. Have to dig out my hooks too! I just brought a book on 100 different crochet and knitted flowers!
ReplyDeletethose are lovely squares.... so another addiction????? careful... oh by the way that book won't work for you... you're not a dummie!
ReplyDeleteHugz
well done on tackling the crochet. the squares look perfect.
ReplyDeletethe fabric for the border finishes it beautifully!
Hello Michelle,
ReplyDeleteLovely crochet blocks, you will have a rug done before the weeks end. If you check out the site Crochet Australia they have the conversions. I use what feels comfortable usually a 3.5 for 8 ply because I don;t like the look a bigger hook gives.
Happy hooking.
Bev.
I'm like you.... can't get over all the gorgeous crochet going around blogland and FB at the moment. It is definitely calling to me too... I've even found my crochet hooks.... Love your granny squares! The quilt is just beautiful! Happy Mothers Day to you... hope you have a wonderful weekend xxxx
ReplyDeleteYour squares look fantastic! Love the sashing on the teddy quilt too.
ReplyDeleteYour granny squares look fabulous. Good on you! I cant crochet to save myself.
ReplyDeleteBut I have started knitting an infinity scarf. Im pretty sure its called an infinity scarf because that's the approximate number of years it'll take me to finish it.
Your square look great, and you embroidered quilt is going to be beautiful. I have started crocheting again after a few years break and have even done two baby jackets! You will get back into the groove and be trying all sorts of patterns in n o time!!
ReplyDeleteThose granny's squares are beautiful. I love the red fabric you choose for the border !!
